Emily studied ceramic design at the Central School of Art where she found herself becoming more and more interested in the surface decoration of her pieces.
Emily went on to set up her company from her Hampstead studio in 2007. Her parents, both highly regarded children’s book illustrators decorated their home with vintage textiles, paintings and ceramics. She feels that being surrounded by these beautiful things from an early age gave her her lifelong passion for colour and pattern.
Her sophisticated designs explore the relationship between distinct eras of art and design and draw influence from Japanese art and traditional wood-block printing techniques.
Based a stone’s throw from Hampstead Heath, the EB studio is surrounded by and filled with flowers, greenery and the sound of birdsong. Japanese ceramics, antique books and vintage furniture and rugs create a rich inspirational environment in which Emily creates her designs.
There is a commitment to producing high quality collections in premium materials and to achieve this Emily Burningham only partners with manufacturers whose craftsmen ensure that everything produced is made to the highest possible standard.
Emily is now joined by her sister Lucy who helps manage the company and designs for the collections. Lucy’s style compliments the collection beautifully and often introduces some of the more graphic contemporary prints to the range.
Emily says “Travelling to the Far East provides me with a rich source of inspiration and I have always had a passion for all things Japanese. I equally find inspiration at home by just stepping out into my garden.”
Our high quality linen and cotton textiles are suitable for both soft furnishings and light upholstery. Our fabrics are produced and printed in the North of England against the backdrop of a rich textile manufacturing industry.
Our collaboration with Museums and Galleries including greetings cards, wrapping paper, stationary and homeware collection comprises a broad selection of designs featuring English seasonal florals, the hedgerow, farmyard and seaside through to tropical and Oriental themes. All paper products are printed on paper that has been sustainably sourced.
“I have often sought sanctuary from the frenetic pace of life in the serenity of a garden. Some of my clearest memories are of times spent admiring the flowers, watching the birds and inspecting insects. English summer evenings evoke memories of watering the plants with my grandmother, whose knowledge and passion instilled in me an appreciation of the natural world that has underpinned my design work ever since.
Travels further from home have also contributed towards my illustrative style. The spirituality, clarity and simplicity of Japanese design have had a significant influence on the collection that the studio produces today.
I hope our blend of traditional English and Eastern influences enhance the environment of our homes and beyond.”
